Belvedere Castle is a miniature castle perched atop Vista Rock, offering panoramic views of Central Park and the city skyline. Built in 1869 by Calvert Vaux and Jacob Wrey Mould, it originally served as a whimsical lookout structure. Its name, “Belvedere,” means “beautiful view” in Italian. Designed in hybrid Gothic and Romanesque style, the structure is made from Manhattan schist and gray granite. Fun fact: The castle was converted into a weather station in 1919 and still serves meteorological purposes today. Today, it houses a visitor center and exhibits, and tourists can climb the towers to capture stunning park photos. It’s a favorite stop for scenic vistas and architectural appreciation.
